The City of Bellevue is adding gateway signs, planted medians and other features to 124th Avenue Northeast to give the Wilburton arterial more of a neighborhood feel.
Construction is anticipated to begin Monday, March 30, on the long-awaited Wilburton Streetscapes Enhancements project, changing 124th Avenue between Main and Northeast Eighth streets. The project is expected to be complete this fall.
The contractor's normal work activities will occur Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Some work may occur on Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Traffic impacts are expected due to frequent lane closures of this two-lane roadway through the end of August.
In addition to gateway signs and medians, the project includes crosswalks, pavement markings and pedestrian-level street lighting, which will have the potential to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance pedestrian safety. The aesthetic improvements, which include landscaping chosen by residents, will accentuate the character of the Wilburton neighborhood. Motorists should feel as if they are driving through a residential neighborhood and not a business or commercial area.
The major impacts to be aware of during construction include the potential for full roadway or partial lane closures. Northbound lane closures will be needed when the water main is replaced. Also, the south leg of 124th Avenue Northeast and Northeast Eighth Street intersection will need to be closed to pour decorative concrete pavement.
