Adding important pedestrian and bicycle amenities, the city will build a sidewalk and bike lanes on Southeast Newport Way between 150th and 152nd avenues, with construction beginning on Tuesday, February 17, and continuing through August.
The project improves access to Eastgate Elementary School and provides better access to transit, along with making the street safer for cyclists, for whom Newport Way is a popular east-west route .
A sidewalk will be built on the south side of that two-block stretch of Newport Way, bike lanes will be on both sides of the roadway and the crosswalk at Eastgate Elementary will be upgraded. The project includes storm drainage improvements, repaving work on Newport Way, water main replacement, irrigation and landscaped planters.
Later this year, as a result of strong community support, design will begin on improvements for the stretch of Newport Way between 150th Avenue and Somerset Boulevard.
Standard work hours will be 7 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The work will require lane closures, but two-way traffic will be maintained at all times. Special attention will be given to maintain access to Eastgate Elementary School for the start and end of school each day. Electronic message boards will be in place to notify drivers of upcoming lane closures. Please use caution when traveling through the construction zone, especially if you are a bicyclist or a pedestrian. Obey posted signs, police officers and flaggers.
